What You’ll Learn in This Quiz

The homeschooling journey is unique for every family and it’s important to find an approach that works best for you.

In this quiz, you’ll learn about the different homeschooling methods including the:

  • traditional approach,
  • classical education,
  • Charlotte Mason method
  • and more!

Each method offers a different perspective on education and has its own set of benefits and drawbacks.

Traditional Education

Traditional homeschooling education is a common approach to schooling that has been used for generations.

It is characterized by a structured curriculum that focuses on core subjects such as math, science, history, and literature.

These subjects are taught in a linear, spiral manner, often starting with basic concepts and building upon them in a systematic way.

In a traditional education setting, students typically sit in a classroom and listen to lectures, complete assignments, and take exams.

There is a strong emphasis on rote learning and memorization, as well as a focus on grades and test scores.

The teacher is often seen as the sole authority on knowledge, and students are expected to conform to a set of rules and expectations.

Traditional education is widely available in public and private schools, and it has been the dominant form of education for many years.

While it has its advantages, such as providing a solid foundation in core subjects, it may not be suitable for all students, as it can be rigid and may not allow for individualized learning.

That said, there are some companies like BJU Press that do the traditional method really well!

Classical Education

Classical education, also known as Classical Christian education, is an educational approach that emphasizes the study of language, history, mathematics, science, and the arts.

It is based on the idea that the study of these subjects is essential for developing critical thinking skills, wisdom, and virtuous character.

The classical education method is divided into three stages, also known as the Trivium:

During the grammar stage, students focus on acquiring knowledge through memorization and repetition (and Latin!).

The logic stage emphasizes reasoning and critical thinking, while the rhetoric stage focuses on communication and persuasive argumentation.

In a classical Christian education, the curriculum is informed by a biblical worldview, and the study of history, literature, and the arts are seen as a way to understand the beauty and wisdom of God’s creation.

The Bible and classical literature form the foundation of the curriculum, and students are encouraged to develop a Christian worldview that shapes their understanding of all subjects.

Classical education places a high value on the study of classical books (called the ‘great books‘) and classical languages (especially Latin and sometimes even Greek), as these languages are seen as the key to unlocking the wisdom of the ancients.

Additionally, classical education stresses the importance of developing good habits and discipline, as well as cultivating a love for learning and a thirst for knowledge.

Overall, classical education aims to produce well-rounded individuals who are equipped with the skills and knowledge to think critically, communicate effectively, and live virtuous lives.

Charlotte Mason Education

Charlotte Mason homeschool education is an educational approach that prioritizes a love of learning and character development.

It was developed by Charlotte Mason, a British educator, in the late 19th century.

The Charlotte Mason approach is based on the idea that children are born with a natural desire to learn and should be provided with a rich and varied educational experience.

This approach emphasizes the use of living books, nature study, art, music, and oral narration, rather than relying on textbooks or worksheets.

Students are encouraged to think for themselves, form their own opinions, and develop critical thinking skills.

In a Charlotte Mason education, the teacher acts as a guide, providing a nurturing and supportive environment for learning.

There is a strong emphasis on developing strong relationships with students and fostering a love for learning in them.

Additionally, character development is seen as an integral part of education, and students are taught to live virtuous lives based on a biblical worldview.

Overall, Charlotte Mason education values a holistic approach to learning and focuses on nurturing the whole person, rather than just imparting knowledge.

It is a flexible and personalized approach that allows students to pursue their interests and passions, while also providing a strong foundation in core subjects.

The basis of a good Charlotte Mason education lies in the books chosen. Here is a list of Charlotte Mason books you can start your kids off with right away.

Rebecca Devitt

Most adults don't particularly want to relive their schooling experience on a daily basis. They would gladly move on to a new life devoid of homework and teachers. Very, very few adults will passionately blog about their schooling some 15 years after graduating. This makes Rebecca Devitt somewhat unique. As it happens, she was homeschooled. And she loved it. Still does. And she wishes every kid could get a taste of homeschooling at its very best. Her website How Do I Homeschool, is a springboard for parents to see what a life of homeschooling could be for both them & their children. When she's not blogging Rebecca is still homeschooling her-adult-self by learning Latin, growing weird vegetables and most importantly looking after her two children Luke & Penny. She has a husband Tristan and is a participant at Wollongong Baptist Church. She's also written a book about why parents should homeschool called 'Why on Earth Homeschool'.
